School Supplies - Expensive and Unused?

"I don't like how the PTO does the school supplies: it is too expensive and where do the supplies not used during the school year go? the trash?" 5/5/2018

For the past several years, the PTO has partnered with 1st Day School Supplies to give Sunset parents the option of ordering a kit of school supplies delivered directly to the school in August. This is not a fundraiser - the PTO does not spend or make any money to provide this service for Sunset families. For 2018-19, the PTO received quotes from four companies who offer this service and voted to continue using 1st Day because they had the best prices and reputation for customer service. The teachers at each grade level determine what they want to included in the kits. For 2018-19, WCS asked schools to keep supply costs below $75/student and our teachers worked hard to whittle the lists down to the essentials. Our teachers requested generic items when possible in an effort to lower costs, but after many years of experience, they know which generic and brand name supplies will survive the school year. Finally, last year, the Green Team collected usable leftover school supplies to share with the Pencil Box, a non-profit organization which benefits Metro Schools.
